Polluting gas will provide 25% of Ontario’s electricity in 2030 – up from 4%

Wed, 04/17/2024 - 09:23

According to the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) 2024 Annual Planning Outlook, one-quarter of Ontario’s electricity supply in 2030 will be produced by burning fossil gas – up from 4% in 2017. To add insult to injury, the IESO is asking the federal government to establish emission caps which will allow the gas plants’ greenhouse

Going in the wrong direction: Ontario’s plan to ramp up gas power

Mon, 04/15/2024 - 09:44

This report examines Ontario's misguided plan to increase the burning of fossil gas in the midst of a climate crisis.  It shows how the Ford government's current plans will lead to a massive increase in climate damaging and air polluting emissions and outlines better alternatives, including tripling solar and wind power and investing in all

Cities speak up for residents, not gas utility profits

Thu, 03/28/2024 - 09:59

A number of Ontario municipalities are taking an important stand for their residents and our climate by calling on the Ford government to drop its plan to protect Enbridge Gas’ subsidies. Hamilton, Guelph, Whitby, Severn, Lake of Bays, Kingston, County of Prince Edward, and Pelham have all passed resolutions urging the provincial government to not

Ontario just keeps getting gassier

Wed, 03/20/2024 - 06:33

Ontario saw a huge spike in fossil gas burning for electricity production in 2023, with gas-fired generation increasing by 26% compared to 2022! This is more evidence of how Ontario has become more and more dependent on polluting gas to keep its lights on despite plenty of better alternatives. But because alternatives like increasing use

More climate backtracking

Mon, 03/11/2024 - 13:40

The federal government appears poised to undercut one of its own signature climate initiatives. This time, the government is proposing changes that will significantly weaken its proposed Clean Electricity Regulations (CERs), which were supposed to deliver a net zero-carbon electricity system across Canada by 2035. The proposed regulations will not clean up Ontario’s increasingly gassy

Clean Electricity Regulations will not stop increased gas burning

Mon, 03/11/2024 - 09:08

Our response to the federal government's revised draft Clean Electricity Regulations (CERs) points out that they could lead to greenhouse gas emissions from Ontario's gas plants being more than triple their emissions in 2017. They would also allow new gas plants to run without any emission limits for at least 20 years and require no

Ford introduces bill to protect Enbridge Gas’ profits – at your expense

Tue, 02/27/2024 - 11:04

Last week, the Ford government introduced a bill to reinstate a massive subsidy for fossil gas pipelines to new home developments and to boost wasteful spending on other fossil gas infrastructure. The legislation will increase both climate damage and energy bills. Ford’s gas pipeline subsidy means most land developers will pay nothing to run gas

You can do something to protect our climate

Thu, 02/22/2024 - 12:48

We’re spreading the word about why Ontario needs to triple its wind and solar power instead of building new polluting gas plants and ramping up gas power pollution by 500% by 2035. You can help.  Our new video highlights how Ontario has fallen badly behind the rest of the world in tapping into the low-cost

More renewable power coming to Ontario

Mon, 02/05/2024 - 11:18

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has informed us that they intend to only contract for new projects in their upcoming procurement aimed at securing 5,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy. Existing projects can put forward expansions, but only the additional generation developed will be considered toward the 5,000 MW target, the IESO says. This

Another backroom bonanza for nuclear interests

Tue, 01/30/2024 - 13:26

In yet another backroom deal bonanza, the Ford government has signed off on a plan to rebuild four 40-year-old nuclear reactors at North America's third-oldest nuclear plant – the Pickering Nuclear Station in the eastern GTA. The government is offering no information on how much this dubious plan will cost in total, but lots of

Heat Pump Performance at Very Low Temperatures

Fri, 01/26/2024 - 08:32

There is a myth that heat pumps are inappropriate for cold climates. That is not true. Modern heat pump systems can keep your home warm and cozy 100% of the time, even on the coldest days, and even in old homes. They need to be properly sized and installed, but so do all other heating

Ford’s Christmas gift to Enbridge Gas

Thu, 01/18/2024 - 13:10

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) has seen the future and that future does not include subsidizing the expansion of fossil gas service to new residential developments. The OEB ended that subsidy, finding that this would lower energy bills for new homebuyers and for existing gas customers. But for a provincial government that still has its

Ontario takes baby steps on renewable energy instead of a big leap

Wed, 01/10/2024 - 08:41

For the last five years, Ontario has been treading water on renewable energy – not contracting for one kilowatt since the election of 2018 – while the rest of the world has surged forward. Now the province says it wants to get back in the game with a target of contracting for 5,000 megawatts (MW)
