We Want to Hear From You!

Thu, 02/29/2024 - 13:31

Hello friends!

Green Action Centre is currently creating a new strategic plan to consider how our programs and policy work can best promote greener and better living into the future – and we want to hear from you!

We know that things are changing in our world – there is increasingly urgent action needed to address the climate crisis; a new era of reconciliation is beginning; exciting emerging possibilities are being explored that can help us all have a positive impact on the world around us. We are taking a step back to consider how changes like these are affecting our work.

You can help us design our future by offering your ideas!

Please take 5 minutes to tell us what you think by responding to the following questions.

All responses will remain confidential. This survey will be open until March 15, 2024. Every survey respondent will have the option to be entered to win a $100 gift card to Planet Pantry!

White Goods Pilot Project

Thu, 02/29/2024 - 11:39

In late 2023, The FNWM team started a pilot project which aims to safely remove legacy white goods (fridges/freezers) from First Nation communities. We hope to protect the community environment by safely capturing remaining refrigerant gas found in white goods before it can leak out into the atmosphere, damaging the ozone layer. By removing the refrigerant gas, we can re-classify the white goods to non-hazardous waste. This helps navigate around transport regulations that had previously kept them stockpiling in communities for decades. To add to the challenge, white goods have no stewardship group. This means that each First Nation community has to pay out of pocket to have them removed.

In November, Pathfinders (alongside a MOPIA technician) traveled out to Bunibonibee Cree Nation to support their waste management team with the de-pollution of white goods. Over a three day period, 118 units were de-polluted and prepared to be shipped as part of this year’s Backhaul. Approximately 4 lbs of refrigerant gas were removed from these units. The first Backhaul load of this winter road season arrived in Winnipeg just last week from BCN, carrying a full load of depolluted white goods.

In late January, the FNWM team flew out to St. Theresa Point First Nation and Wasagamack First Nation to spend the week de-polluting white goods. Our team, working alongside St. Theresa Point and Wasagamack waste management crews were able to dig a total of 223 units out from the snow. We placed them in the loader bucket to be sent to the staging area to be de-polluted by the MOPIA technician, who once again accompanied us for this project. Approximately 25 lbs of refrigerant gas was collected from the white goods in both communities.

FNWM hopes to visit Lac Brochet (the 4th community participating in this pilot project) in Spring to provide de-pollution services to their legacy fridges and freezers as well. While the current winter road season will likely be over by then, the units can be shipped as part of next year’s Backhaul.

Big thanks going out to St. Theresa Point, Wasagamack and Bunibonibee landfill crews for their hospitality, and helping us with our mission. We couldn’t have done it without their expertise and machine-operating abilities!

Staff Book Recommendations | I Love to Read Month

Tue, 02/27/2024 - 09:25

February in Canada is I love to read Month. While February is swiftly coming to a close, March is coming and this is the prefect oppertunity to start a new book for the new season. Check out our staff picks for books they are loving.

Nikole’s Pick –  Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

” This is my favorite reread. It’s funny and lighthearted, and very well written. And, bonus, it has one of the best book-to-screen adaptations I’ve ever seen!”

Kristen’s Pick – The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah

“This book captivated me from the beginning. A family of three moves to a remote Alaskan community, where they have to learn to survive in this rugged wilderness, but also deal with the father’s PTSD from the Vietnam War. It explores the themes of trauma, domestic abuse, the complexity of relationships, and the strong ties of community. If you like the thought of roughing it but don’t actually want to do it, you can live vicariously through this book.”

Mel’s Pick – Children of Tomorrow by  J.R. Burgmann

“It’s climate fiction (cli-fi) which is a genre I’m getting into. I like the creativity of cli-fi instead of just reading non-fiction about climate change. The book starts in 2016 and then jumps forward a generation, and we can see the fall-out of climate change on the next generation. That said, it does still have a message of hope.”

Mo’s pick – No Surrender: The Land Remains Indigenous by Sheldon Krasowski (Forward by Winona Wheeler)

“The book challenges the historical narratives around Treaties One through Seven, bringing new and disregarded voices into the forefront.”

Ariel’s Pick – Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

“I normally don’t love memoirs but this book is amazing. Beautifully written, the book serves as a tribute to Zauner’s late mother and the connection they shared through food, which helped tie Michelle to her Korean side once her mother was gone. It is a tear jerker!”

Sean’s Pick – This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein

“It contains some real world environmental disputes at a local level that are both concerning and inspiring to learn about.”

Ashtyn’s Pick – Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

” I think it’s beautifully written, shows how important being connected with the land is, and it shares  Indigenous knowledge.”

Nick’s Pick – Shelterbelts by Jonathan Dyck

“It’s a graphic novel set in a rural Mennonite prairie town in Manitoba and it tells stories from a variety of perspectives on the challenges and differing views that exist there. I appreciated particularly how Dyck identifies how different characters relate to the land and their place.”

Harry’s Pick – All The Light We Cannot See – by Anthoney Doerr

“One of my favs because I like historical fiction as a genre, really well written, and really draws you in with how interconnected the stories of the different characters are and the compelling way the author sets them on a collision course within the greater events of World War 2. An easy to binge book- and not a bad netflix series either!”

Jordan’s Pick – Lord Of Chaos by Robert Jordan

“This is my favourite book in my favourite series. The Wheel of Time series has literally shaped my brain chemistry, as I started reading when I was a teen and read it through to adulthood.”

Sarah’s Pick – Solving Poverty by Jim Silver

“This was a book that was assigned to me in my understudy and helped to open my eyes to the complexities of Winnipeg’s poverty and shattered Urban Landscape. Shifting me to a more empathetic viewpoint that recognized that all income classes and vulnerable individuals need to be considered in Winnipeg’s urban revitalization for it’s success.”

Sharee’s Pick – Wild by Cheryl Strayed

“I love this book because it reminded of my youth spent outside and reminds me that there are so many possibilities for more adventures”

Amy’s Pick – A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

” I love how magical it is!”

If you are interested in reading any of these books, keep in mind that April 27th is Independent Bookstore Day. We at Green Action love our independent bookstores! Here are just a few in Winnipeg and Manitoba:

 Happy Reading!
