Extraction, Extremism, Insurrection: Impacts on Government Employees
By Wild Earth Guardians - YouTube, February 24, 2021
This WildEarth Webinar, recorded on February 24, 2021, explored the clear links between resource extraction, far-right extremism, and insurrection—with a special focus on the impacts to government employees across the American West.
The webinar featured former U.S. Forest Service Supervisor Gloria Floria and Richard Spotts, former Bureau of Land Management planning and environmental coordinator for the Arizona Strip District Office.
For over four decades, Gloria has lived and worked in, on, and around rural Western public lands. As a former Forest Service supervisor, she’s witnessed firsthand the impacts of corporate, anti-government, and anti-regulatory extremism. In fact, Gloria resigned from the agency to call political and national attention to the dangers of domestic terrorists targeting federal lands and employees.
During his 15 years at the Bureau of Land Management, Richard experienced many external and internal threats attempting to intimidate him from doing his job. The threats included harassing phone calls from supporters of a scofflaw public lands rancher, an improper complaint against him from a powerful right-wing county commissioner, and agency managers admonishing him to stop raising legal concerns in writing.
