Environment, labour and justice: perspectives from the Global South

By various - Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas da Universidade de São Paulo, April 4, 2022

This webinar series employs insights from the developing field of environmental labour studies to discuss questions of just transition and environmental justice struggles based on examples from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. The series unpacks both challenges and possibilities for mending the breach between labour and nature and illustrates the tensions of working people’s struggle for eco-social justice within a neoliberal, extractivist political economy. It will shed light on conflicts around environmental conservation, between miners and communities affected by mining and look at mobilizations of workers against regressive climate policies that put a disproportionate burden on lower-income groups. Bringing together a wealth of experiences and perspectives from different parts of the world, the series launches the new Palgrave Handbook of Environmental Labour Studies and highlights the contributions environmental labour studies can make to fuse eco-social research and practice. The series is co-organized by the Center for Environmental Justice at Colorado State University, the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), the Global Labour University (GLU), the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), and the University of São Paulo.
