A Worker-Led Approach: Shaping the Future of Aviation

By various - Safe Landing, March 15, 2023

The aviation industry is currently facing big challenges to reduce its environmental impact. Just recently, the European Transport Federation published the report “Landing Desirable Jobs” arguing strongly for a long-term sustainability perspective and a plan for decarbonisation led by the heart of the industry: its workers.

Aviation workers are speaking up and developing their own vision of the future for travel and the prospects for a worker-driven transformation of the sector. We invited aviation sector employees to a conversation about their future and job security in a world of climate crisis. So-called Workers’ Assemblies (inspired by Citizen Assemblies) are one way of encouraging these conversations.

Transport & Environment, Safe Landing, and Stay Grounded organised an online workshop on February 16th 2023, inviting aviation workers to have an exchange about their future and job security. The aim was to bring together workers, companies and trade unions from different countries to share experiences, network and to strategise. The session was kicked-off by an hour of presentations from speakers, followed by an hour of Q&A, break-out room discussions and feedback.
